Wo | Man Ray. The seductions of photography
17 October 2019 - 19 January 2020
Man Ray and the feminine world in 200 images, made since the 20s in Paris, where the master, tireless experimenter, was the protagonist of the Dadaist and Surrealist season. On display are some masterpieces that have made the history of photography. Portraits of models, companions, well-known colleagues such as Lee Miller, Berenice Abbott, Dora Maar, inspirational muses but also leading artists: to them and to an extraordinary period for culture will be dedicated a part of the exhibition, which includes some rarities such as Les mannequins. Résurrection des mannequins of 1938.
Man Ray (Philadelphia, 1890 – Paris, 1976), born Emmanuel Radnitzky, revolutionized the photographic language of the 20th century and the very genres of nude and portrait. Through the use of techniques (rayographs, solarisations, double exposures), the female body is subjected to continuous metamorphoses of forms and meanings. In the portfolio The Fifty Faces of Juliet, dedicated to his wife, for example, the woman is transformed into many different figures, in a game of seduction, quotations and provocations.
