Arte Fiera is an annual event you cannot miss.
The Bologna fair this year took place from February 1st to the 4th. In this 2019 edition we have noticed some great changes that have impressed us.
The renovation is evident both from an aesthetic point of view and from the proposals made by the galleries.
Gallery owners who presented works by one artist only could obtain benefits. A risky choice, commercially, but that proved successful.
Finally a well-defined space dedicated to photography and to the various galleries that deal with it. The area immediately made a good impression: order, clean vision, with a good display of the photographs that stood out and emerged in the spaces.
Excellent proposals and above all excellent work done by the four curators who are part of Fantom and who have named the research of 2019:PHOTOGRAPHY AND IMAGES IN MOTION.
The common thread of the section was the
transversal gaze with which the main means of reproducing reality were explored: photography and video works were presented without limits of genre, technique and content, favouring the dialogue with other artistic disciplines. Archival materials, digital reconstructions, 3D installations, unconventional supports: the section was not only concerned with what photography and the moving image are, but also with what they are becoming, in an ongoing process of transformation and renovation. In this 2019 edition, the goal was to offer an overview of the best proposals of Italian galleries, with particular attention to the work of emerging artists, whether they consider photography and video as media or interpret them as subjects to be explored and investigated.
The curators: the FANTOM collective
Born between Milan and New York, Fantom is a non-profit association that explores the trajectories of, and between, photography, sound and visual arts. It began its activity in 2009, initiated by Selva Barni, with a quarterly publication and a series of photo books. In 2012 the publication of the magazine was interrupted to evolve into a collective that imagines and implements exhibitions, performances, editorial projects and recordings. In addition to Selva Barni, Fantom also includes Laura Speri, Massimo Torrigiani and Francesco Zanot. Fantom has curated exhibitions, installations and performances with Batia Suter, Brice Dellsperger, Mario Milizia, Maurizio Anzeri, Raed Yassin, Ruth van Beek, Shilpa Gupta, Soundwalk Collective, Taisuke Koyama and Yang Fudong, and the Rencontres Internationales de la Photo de Fès (Morocco, 2014). From 2015 to 2017 it curated the initial program of the Viasaterna gallery in Milan, with personal exhibitions by Guido Guidi, Lorenzo Vitturi, Mario Milizia, Takashi Homma and Theo Drebbel, and double personal and collective exhibitions including 2016: On new Italian photography. From 2016 to 2018 it coordinated the production and set-up of a series of exhibitions commissioned by the City of Milan and produced by the Alcantara company at Palazzo Reale: I saw a king; Fantastic starting code; Nine time travel. In the summer of 2018 he produced The Ulrows Syndrome of the Soundwalk Collective in the former Oratory of Santa Maria del Sabato, among the official collateral projects of the Manifesta 12 Palermo biennial and then installed at the Petit Palais of the Bardo National Museum in Tunis.
