David LaChapelle | Atti divini
14 June 2019 - 6 January 2020
The colorful paradise of the famous American artist, a world suspended between sacred and the profane, sensuality and spirituality, nature and culture. In the majestic setting of the Reggia di Venaria, 70 large-format photographs, imposing and solemn images are placed, synthesis of the most significant moments of the photographer.
LaChapelle draws on the art of Renaissance and Christian iconography, giving us a different representation of humanity. The photographs are wrapped in a dreamlike atmosphere, but start from real reconstructions.
Between the works on show: Le Deluge (2005 ), tribute to Michelangelo’s fresco in the Sistine Chapel; Rape of Africa (2009) that portrays Naomi Campbell as a Venus by Botticelli in the gold mines of the black continent; the still life nature of the series Land SCAPE and Gas (2013); the unpublished works of the new series New World (2017-2019) which represents the artist’s astonishment for the sublime and the search for spirituality in scenes of tropical utopia.
