Gabriele Basilico/ Giovan Battista Piranesi | Viaggi e vedute: da Roma a Shanghai

The exhibition revolve around a middle section: photographs of Rome that Basilico shoot from the same point of views of some famous views of the great Venetian etcher. Basilico investigates the symbolic architecture of the city with the usual rigorous and documentary style in 32 shots compared to Piranesi’s many engravings, in a fascinating dialogue between contemporaneity and history. The work was commissioned by the Giorgio Cini Foundation of Venice in 2010, on the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to Piranesi.The set-up is completed by a selection of over 50 images of different formats, made by Basilico in his countless travels around the world, exploring different cities and at the same time putting them in relation to each other. Where we can find  the urban landscapes, the geometric architectures, the industrial areas and the transformation of the territory, the conceptual poetics and the privileged research areas that have made famous the great photographer,  passed away in 2013.
