Tina Modotti – Women, Mexico and freedom

1 May 2021 - 7 November 2021

MUDEC Photo hosts some of the most iconic shots of one of the most important female figures within the photographic landscape of the 20th century. Tina Modotti’s shots, which navigate the sea of political activism and social commitment, are exhibited in an attempt to render a realistic and truthful portrait of a pivotal artist of the first half of the 20th century.

The artistic activity carried out in Mexico, the United States, Spain and other European countries is linked by the red thread of freedom and political and ideological integrity of the photographer from Udine. Tina Modotti’s work, dusted off by her companion Vittorio Vidali a few decades after the artist’s death, contributed to making her a prominent figure in the world of reportage and photojournalism – which at the time was predominantly male – and a symbol of emancipation, strength, independence.

Tina Modotti – Women, Mexico and Freedom also aims to analyze the personal relationships that Modotti was able to weave over the years: from Vittorio Vidali to Edward Weston, from Frida Kahlo to Pablo Neruda… The silver salts prints are accompanied by texts, videos, documents and letters that help to give the best idea of the complexity of a character who never gave up art in favor of activism, but instead managed to combine the two aspects within her films and her masterful work.
