SUMMARY:L’arte e la città
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration and in connection with Centro di informazione e documentazione CID/Arti visive and Urban Center di Prato\, the Centro Pecci of the Tuscan city inaugurates “L’arte e la città”\, an exhibition aimed at the valorization of the artistic and historical heritage of Prato. \nThe exhibition\, divided into three sections\, was created as a dialogue between unpublished archival materials and works belonging to the collections of various museums and institutions. The works on display aim to analyze the relationship between the urban environment of the city of Prato (understood as a reflection of a metropolitan context in constant renewal and extension) and the works of contemporary art that were conceived or created in the same geographical area. \nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, a series of events aimed at stimulating connections with works and cultural initiatives in the city and connections with productive activities in the territory will also be organized. \n

SUMMARY:Ruth Orkin - Leggenda della fotografia
DESCRIPTION:Musei Civici di Bassano del Grappa host the first Italian monograph of Ruth Orkin\, the historic American photographer and filmmaker. \nThe retrospective is being held in Bassano on the occasion of the centenary of the artist’s birth (1921); the exhibition has been displayee in various locations between New York and Toronto\, and after the first (and only) Italian stop\, it will prepare to travel to the rest of Europe. \nThe monograph reflects Orkin’s aesthetic style\, which skillfully blends photographic and cinematographic language; whether it was a matter of subjects belonging to the Hollywood star system or of ordinary New Yorkers\, the American photographer always tried to transpose single shots into visual novels\, stories created through static images\, largely inspired by the most important films of the time. \n

SUMMARY:Robert Capa. Photographs Beyond the war.
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition to discover Robert Capa’s photography beyond the war\, focusing on his lesser-known reportages.\nThe exhibition explores his relationship with the world of culture of the time with portraits of famous personalities such as Picasso\, Hemingway and Matisse\, thus showing his ability to penetrate deeply into the lives of immortalized people. At the same time there will be a section dedicated to his reportages dedicated to period films. After the end of the Second World War\, the Swedish actress introduced Capa on the set of Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorius\, where she ventured for the first time as a still photographer. Within a few years\, Capa confronts sacred monsters of the caliber of Humphrey Bogart and John Houston; immortalizes the beauty of Gina Lollobrigida and the intensity of Anna Magnani. He will then mature the choice\, congenial to his sensitivity and the privileged object of his artistic research\, to confront himself with the great masters of neorealism. The images captured on the set of ‘Riso Amaro’ are therefore extraordinary\, with breathtaking portraits of Silvana Mangano and Doris Dowling. \n

SUMMARY:Vivian Maier. Inedita.
DESCRIPTION:From 9 February to 26 June 2022\, the Chiablese Rooms of the Royal Museums of Turin host the exhibition of Vivian Maier (1926-2009)\, one of the leading exponents of so-called street photography. \nRight from the title\, Inedita\, the exhibition that arrives in Italy after a first stop at the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris (15 September 2021 – 16 January 2022)\, aims to tell unknown or little-known aspects of Vivian’s mysterious human and artistic life Maier\, deepening new chapters or proposing previously unpublished works\, such as the series of shots taken during his trip to Italy\, in particular to Turin and Genoa\, in the summer of 1959. \nThe exhibition itinerary touches on the most characteristic themes of his stylistic code and opens with the series of his self-portraits in which his stern gaze is reflected in the mirrors\, in the shop windows and his long shadow invades the lens almost as if he wanted to finally present himself at the audience he has never wanted or been able to meet. \nA section is dedicated to shots captured between the streets of New York and Chicago. Vivian Maier prefers the proletarian neighborhoods of the cities where she lived. Tireless\, he walks throughout the urban fabric populated by anonymous people who\, in front of his lens\, become protagonists\, even for a single fraction of a second\, and unconsciously play a role. \nAn important chapter of the exhibition is dedicated to color photographs. While black and white works are profoundly silent\, color ones present themselves as a space full of sounds\, a place where one must first hear in order to see. This musical concept of color seems to echo in the urban space\, like the blues flowing through the streets of Chicago and\, in particular\, in the popular neighborhoods frequented by Maier. \nA section dedicated to the theme of childhood that accompanied Vivian Maier throughout her life could not be missing. Due to his closeness to children for so many years\, he was able to see the world with a unique ability. As a housekeeper and nanny for almost forty years\, Maier has taken part in the lives of the children in her care\, documenting the faces\, emotions\, expressions\, grimaces\, looks\, as well as the games\, the imagination and everything else that inhabits the life of a child. \n

SUMMARY:Robert Doisneau
DESCRIPTION:At the Saint-Bénin Center in Aosta\, from 5 March to 22 May 2022 it will be possible to visit the Robert Doisneau exhibition\, a major retrospective on the famous French photographer. \n“The highly selected images that the curator Gabriel Bauret has chosen for this exhibition – reveals the Director of Exhibition Activities Daria Jorioz – come from the Atelier Doisneau in Montrouge\, in the south of the French capital. They are empathic images that bring the observer closer\, make him a participant and not just a spectator. Robert Doisneau embodies the image of the humanist photographer immersed in the life of his city: he captures its breath\, emotions\, social transformations\, narrates its beauty\, contradictions\, minimal stories that make up its collective history. The French photographer grows up with his city\, observes it taking visual notes\, tells about it starting from the street\, is reflected in the games of children who invent their world\, tells about the sometimes rough condition of adults. He always does it with delicacy and grace\, sometimes with melancholy\, often with a subtly disguised or playfully evident irony. ” \nAmong the works on display\, Le Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville\, Paris\, 1950\, a famous and iconic image\, considered one of the most reproduced in the world\, could not be missing. In this famous shot\, Doisneau was able to capture a magical moment and an emotion that are universal.\nIn Montrouge\, Doisneau has been developing and archiving his images for over fifty years\, and that’s where he died in 1994\, leaving a legacy of nearly 450\,000 negatives. \n

SUMMARY:Sabine Weiss. La poesia dell'istante.
DESCRIPTION:The Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice presents the largest retrospective ever held dedicated to the Franco-Swiss photographer Sabine Weiss\, who passed away at the age of 97 at her home in Paris on 28 December 2021\, one of the greatest representatives of French humanist photography along with Robert Doisneau\, Willy Ronis\, Edouard Boubat\, Brassaï\, and Izis. \nThe exhibition is the first and most important tribute to her career\, with over 200 photographs. Curated by Virginie Chardin\, the retrospective is sponsored by the Fondazione di Venezia\, realized by Marsilio Arte in collaboration with the Berggruen Institute\, and produced by the Sabine Weiss studio in Paris and Laure Delloye-Augustins\, with the support of the Jeu de Paume and the International Festival Les Rencontres de la photographie d’Arles. \nThe only woman photographer of the postwar era to have practiced this profession for such a long time and in every photographic genre – from reportage\, artists’ portraits\, and fashion to ‘street’ photography\, with particular attention to children’s faces and her extensive travels around the world\, Sabine Weiss\, who was able to actively participate in the construction of this exhibition\, had opened her personal archives in Paris to tell her extraordinary story and present her work for the first time in a comprehensive and structured way. \nThe shots exhibited at the Tre Oci retrace\, along with various publications and magazines of the time\, Weiss’s entire career\, from her beginnings in 1935 to the 1980s. From the outset\, as the photographs of children and passersby in the exhibition testify\, Weiss directed her lens on bodies and gestures\, immortalizing emotions and feelings\, in the spirit of French humanist photography\, an approach from which she would never deviate\, as can be seen from her words: “To be powerful\, a photograph must speak to us about an aspect of the human condition\, make us feel the emotion that the photographer felt in the presence of her subject“.  \nBorn Sabine Weber in Saint-Gingolph\, Switzerland\, on 23 July 1924\, later taking the surname of her husband\, the American painter Hugh Weiss (Philadelphia\, 1925 – Paris\, 2007)\, she approached photography at an early age. She completed her apprenticeship with the Boissonnas\, a dynasty of photographers who had been working in Geneva since the end of the 19th century. In 1946\, she left Geneva for Paris and became the assistant of Willy Maywald\, a German photographer specializing in fashion and portraits. When she married Hugh in 1950\, she embarked on a career as an independent photographer. Together\, they moved into a small Parisian studio\, where Weiss still lives\, and frequented the postwar art milieu. \nOne of the core groups of works in the exhibition Sabine Weiss. The Poetry of the Instant tells the story of the 1950s\, the period in which the photographer gained international recognition. In 1952\, her career took a decisive turn when she joined the Rapho agency on the recommendation of Robert Doisneau. From 1953 onwards\, her photographs were published by major international dailies and magazines including Picture Post\, Paris Match\, Vogue\, Le Ore\, The New York Times\, Life\, and Newsweek. In that same year\, Weiss participated in the exhibition Post War European Photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA)\, and in 1954 the Art Institute of Chicago dedicated an important solo exhibition to her work. In 1955 Edward Steichen chose three of her shots for the historic anthological exhibition The Family of Man at the MoMA. \nFrom 1952 to 1961\, Weiss collaborated with photographers such as William Klein\, Henry Clarke\, and Guy Bourdin\, producing some memorable fashion shoots for Vogue\, from which the exhibition displays several vivid color prints along with 15 original issues of the legendary magazine. \nA section of the exhibition is dedicated to her portraits of painters\, sculptors\, actors\, and musicians. For five years\, Hugh Weiss mentored the artist Niki de Saint Phalle\, whereas Sabine was close to Annette Giacometti\, wife of the great sculptor Alberto. The exhibition features their portraits alongside those of other personalities such as Robert Rauschenberg\, Françoise Sagan\, Romy Schneider\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Simone Signoret\, and Brigitte Bardot. \nA voyage to America in 1955 aboard the ocean liner Liberté in the company of her husband Hugh made a strong impression on her\, and the shots taken in the streets of New York\, teeming with details\, from the Bronx and Harlem to Chinatown and Ninth Avenue\, were published in The New York Times in a major spread entitled “A Parisienne’s New Yorkers”. The images tell the story of America from a French point of view\, with a marked sense of humor\, many of which are exhibited for the first time in Italy\, on the occasion of the retrospective at the Tre Oci. \nThe exhibition also reserves ample space for works created in the 1980s\, when the artist was in her sixties\, during her travels to Portugal\, India\, Myanmar\, Bulgaria\, and Egypt. As the curator Virginie Chardin observes\, “These works have an extraordinary intellectual with an occasional sentimental note\, centered on solitude\, faith\, and moments of reflection on the nature of existence”. \nIn addition to photographs\, the exhibition will also feature excerpts from documentary films dedicated to Weiss (La Chambre Noire of 1965; Sabine Weiss of 2005; My work as photographer of 2014) in which the photographer recounts\, in different periods of her life\, her artistic journey\, her travel experiences\, and the difficulty of being a female photographer. The strength of her curiosity for the world and her joy of seeing and documenting it make Sabine Weiss a symbol of courage and freedom for all women photographers. \n

SUMMARY:James Barnor: ACCRA/LONDON – A retrospective
DESCRIPTION:MASI Lugano presents the largest retrospective ever devoted to the photographer James Barnor (Accra\, Ghana\, 1929\, lives and works in London). Throughout his lengthy career\, spanning six decades and two continents\, Barnor has been an extraordinary visual witness to the social and political changes of his time – from the independence of Ghana to the African diaspora and the lives of London’s African community. With his candid\, spontaneous gaze\, the Ghanaian-British photographer has navigated different places\, cultures and genres\, from photojournalism and social documentary to studio portraiture and fashion and lifestyle work. Although he has influenced generations of photographers in Africa and around the world\, his work has only recently been rediscovered and valued. \n“James Barnor: Accra/London – A Retrospective” presents a selection of over 200 works from Barnor’s vast personal archive\, including numerous previously unpublished images. Whether family photos\, commissioned portraits or commercial assignments\, Barnor’s exceptional ability to convey official and personal histories in the terms of an intimate dialogue\, encounters based on a human connection\, shines through. \nIn addition to vintage photographs\, reprints and original documents\, the show also presents magazine covers and record sleeves\, and focuses in particular on the decades 1950-1980. It unfolds in the historic rooms of the Palazzo Reali as a chronological journey through the key periods in Barnor’s life and work – from the early days in Accra\, with his “Ever Young” studio\, to his years in London; from his first colour photographs to his collaboration with the anti-apartheid magazine “Drum” and his passion for music and the performing arts. \nThe exhibition also includes a video by Campbell Addy of Barnor introducing his work\, and another in which he explains his photographic technique. \nAfter being presented at the Serpentine Galleries in London (19.05-24.10.2021)\, and MASI Lugano\, the show will travel to the Detroit Institute of Arts (Spring 2023)\, with the aim of raising the profile of a photographer whose work has had a major artistic and social impact. \nPresented in collaboration with Serpentine\, London. “James Barnor: Accra/London – A Retrospective” is initiated and organised by Serpentine\, London. Curated by Lizzie Carey-Thomas\, Chief Curator\, Serpentine and Awa Konaté: Culture Art Society (CAS)\, Assistant Curator. \nOrganised in collaboration with Clémentine de la Féronnière\, Isabella Seniuta and Sophie Culière\, James Barnor Archives \n

SUMMARY:Ettore Sottsass. Foto dal finestrino.
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nThe exhibition Ettore Sottsass. Foto dal finestrino (Photos from a Window)\, developed in collaboration with Studio Sottsass and designed by Christoph Radl brings together 26 photographs – associated with as many short texts – that Ettore Sottsass took between 2004 and 2006 and published in Domus as part of Foto dal finestrino\, a column created by Stefano Boeri\, the magazine’s editor-in-chief at the time. These snapshots were taken by Sottsass during his travels around the world. They are accompanied by reflections about design\, architecture\, and urban planning\, as well as by travel memories and observations about the present. In 2009 Adelphi published this project as a volume in their Biblioteca minima series. \n\n\n\nIndia and Iran\, Bali and Hong Kong\, but also Milan\, Catania\, and Ponza: Foto dal finestrino is a collection of snapshots – both in colour and in black & white – taken with the old Leica M6 that Sottsass always used to carry with him on his travels. This series of photographs reveals Sottsass’s gaze on the reality surrounding him and his remarkable ability to combine words and images with the utmost freedom\, so as to build a unique\, personal narrative starting precisely from the gap between the two. Sottsass captures hidden worlds and realities that no one has ever noticed before\, and which he depicts in a direct and pithy way. \n\n\n\nInfo \n\n
