SUMMARY:Jacques Henri Lartigue - Invention of happiness. Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Reopened to the public after the lockdown and extended until January 2021\, the Venetian exhibition presents 120 images 55 of which previously unknown\, all coming from the photo albums where Lartigue (1894-1986) collected his carefree shots\, in which “photography becomes the means to resurrect life\, to relive happy moments\, again and again”. \nThe exhibition traces the author’s entire career\, from the early 1900s to the 1980s\, focusing on different significant moments: the Belle Époque golden age and the life of the elegant Parisian bourgeoisie\, the car races\, the horseracing competitions\, sports and social gatherings; the “wonder” for what surrounded him\, the daily moments and family\, photographed with an ironic look\, with a playful and curious spirit; the success achieved with the exhibition at the MoMA in New York in 1963; the shots for fashion magazines and cinema\, where he worked as a stage photographer for many films. The cult of happiness\, of the fleeting moment is the fil rouge that characterizes the work of the French photographer: “images that are able to make history and at the same time be the light fragment of a deep feeling”. \n

SUMMARY:Franco Guerzoni - The stolen image
DESCRIPTION:The Museo del Novecento in Milan\, in an environment that Guerzoni himself defined as “intimate” and which includes the Lantern Room and the Archives room\, hosts an exhibition dedicated to the Modenese artist (born 1948). Curated by Martina Corgnati\, the exhibition focuses on the “fragmentary character of some research seasons”\, significant pieces meeting in a dialogue of meaningful correspondences\, between painting\, matter and photography. \nWe can admire the works created by the artist in the last decade\, a journey around the theme of the “wall”\, old\, precarious\, peeling and dusty walls\, furrowed by scratches\, moulds\, cracks and saltpetre: at the beginning\, of photographic shots used as a support and then represented on canvas. Real ruins or more frequently simulated and suggestively reconstructed\, the images interact with works of the early 1970s\, born from the collaboration with his friends Luigi Ghirri and Franco Vaccari\, both photographers\, in a period of artistic experimentation very close to photography. A showcase shows a labyrinth of photographic sequences\, often unreleased\, that the author called Irrisolti (Unresolved)\, and that recall the early stages of his artistic research. Intravedere (Glimpse)\, on the other hand\, is the last chapter of this search: small rooms of chalky material whose image is hidden\, precisely “stolen” from the observer’s gaze. \n

SUMMARY:Alec Soth - I know how furiously your heart is beating
DESCRIPTION:Foam Museum in Amsterdam hosts Alec Soth’s most recent project: I know how furiously your heart is beating takes its name from a line in Wallace Stevens’ poem The Gray Room and is the result of a personal search\, born after a period of introspection\, during which Soth didn’t travel and didn’t photograph\, slowing down his work process. \nThe series marks a departure from Magnum’s photographer’s earlier work: “Rather than trying to make some sort of epic narrative about America” he explained\, this time he simply wanted “to spend time in the presence of another beating heart” and to take a glimpse of their interior life. Soth chose to concentrate on individuals from different parts of the world (the “place” was not important) and on their private spaces\, taking intense portraits of people in their home or habitat and still-lifes of their personal objects and belongings. \n

SUMMARY:Guido Guidi - Lunario
DESCRIPTION:“A thirty-year long photographic journey on the theme of the Moon\, with its load of philosophical\, literary and mythological meanings”. The series of images composing the book Lunario 1968-1999 (Mack\, 2019) is now on display at the Ospitale in Rubiera (RE)\, in an exhibition which also shows unpublished materials and curated by Linea di Confine. \nIllusions\, echoes and metaphors about the moon or crescent moon reappear in a face\, in shapes or shadows\, in landscapes shot with a fish-eye lens\, until the partial eclipse of the moon in August 1999. The approach is experimental\, Guidi records a series of lunar apparitions\, investigating the technological aspects of the photographic medium to explore optical\, physical and natural phenomena. \n

SUMMARY:Harry Gruyaert - Last call
DESCRIPTION:Harry Gruyaert’s work at the Magnum Photo Gallery in Paris until December 31st\, 2020. \nThe exhibition shows a selection from his Last Call series\, a collection of images made in airports around the world. \nMember of Magnum Photos since 1982\, Harry Gruyaert (Antwerp\, 1941) is fascinated by those liminal and transitional spaces full of frustration\, queues\, and heavily scented duty-free retail opportunities\, where the theatricality of human movement is constantly on display. Airports especially\, that are\, he writes\, spaces “with a host of players gliding through as though they’re on a stage”. He has always loved to watch people there\, with their movements\, their postures\, their gazes\, the groups that they form and “the situations that occur in those peculiar moments when time is standing still.” \nThe architecture\, the furniture and the colors of an airport combine to make a sort of set\, with people acting a sort of performance slightly difficult to understand completely\, but visually effective. \nGruyaert uses to say that the human figure is not the most important thing in his photographs\, since he “was much more interested in all the elements: the decor and the lighting and all the cars; the details were as important as humans. That’s a different attitude altogether.” \nHarry Gruyaert‘s embrace of color photography set him ahead of many contemporaries in Europe at a time when the medium was widely seen as most applicable to the realm of commercial and advertising photography. \nThe complete Last Call series has been published by Thames & Hudson in 2020. \n
