DESCRIPTION:Hujar’s life and art (1934-1987) in downtown New York during the 70s and 80s\, in a world of avant-garde\, dance\, music\, art\, drag performance: among the 160 images on display there are also his famous portraits of art and culture celebrities. His mature career paralleled the public unfolding of gay life between the Stonewall uprising in 1969 and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. \nIn his loft studio in the East Village\, Hujar has taken “simple and direct photographs of complicated and difficult subjects”\, capturing moments\, individuals and subcultures that pass “at the speed of life”. \n  \n
